CLEAN SUSTAINABLE MARINE AREAS AND SAFE SURF
WELCOME
My Name is Chris, I am a senior at UC San Diego studying communications with an emphasis in environmental studies. Much of my research at UC San Diego has been geared towards environmental and coastal environments both on a local and global scale. Protecting and restoring San Diego’s waters, is a commitment I hold dear to my heart. Issues such as the California water crisis, local water quality, ocean acidification, and marine protected environments would represent some of the specific areas of research I have conducted at UC San Diego. Studies I have done dealing with the intersection of urban runoff and its effects on surfers and marine environments show the importance of these issues at a local level. Merging the field between communication studies and environmental conservation allowed myself to become very specific on topics of awareness and of research. My passion for our coastlines and natural wilderness has impacted me deeply, I hope through my website to inspire and educate more people to explore these beautiful landscapes.
The ways I view our natural environment is fueled from a past history of exploration and adventure. The impact wilderness has taken on me can be attributed from experiences I have had while backpacking across the Sierra Nevada’s and combing Californians coastline in search of perfect waves. The freedom and release nature provides has a deep impact on the way I view these valuable areas. Becoming constantly conscious of California’s natural landscapes and the conservation efforts to sustain them greatly motivated me to investigate the groups that were working on doing so. Participating in conservation efforts repairing hiking trails, beach clean ups, and facilitating a community service project restoring a footbridge for a local park, are some of the ways I found constructive participation in conservation. Working closely with these landscapes and conservation minded organizations began to solidify my passion for these areas increasing my involvement in the safeguarding of these natural reserves. These decisions helped shape my major and emphasis in environmental communication, finding my deep interest in preservation of natural landscapes and coastlines.
